WE WILL TAKE A LOOK AT WHAT TO EXPECT DURING THE ROOT CANAL PROCEDURE. READ OUR GUIDE TO LEARN ABOUT THE ROOT CANAL PROCEDURE, TREATMENT, RECOVERY, AND MORE.

Do you have a toothache that just won't go away? You may need to schedule a root canal procedure with your dentist in Cleveland. Otherwise, you could experience complications.

About 87% of Americans wish they'd taken better care of their teeth. Another 80% don't realize oral health is linked to strokes and heart attacks. A root canal can improve your oral and overall health.

Read on to learn more about root canal treatment today!

What Is a Root Canal?

A root canal dental procedure involves removing the soft center of your tooth (the pulp). A tooth's pulp is made of blood vessels, connective tissue, and nerves.

The pulp can become inflamed, infected, or injured. This can occur due to:

  • An untreated cavity
  • A crack or chip
  • An accident
  • Multiple procedures on the same tooth

However, the tooth's crown (the part you can see) will still remain intact. You might experience pain, swelling, or heat in your gums. If these symptoms sound familiar, schedule root canal treatment.

A root canal could save your tooth. If the damage is too deep, your dentist might recommend alternative treatments. For example, they might recommend extracting the tooth.

Your dentist will request X-rays and examine your tooth to confirm the diagnosis. Removing the infected pulp could preserve the structure of your tooth.

The Procedure

Your Cleveland dentist can perform the root canal procedure at their office.

First, your dentist will place numbing medication on the gum around the affected tooth. They'll also inject a local anesthetic into your gums. You should only feel a small pinch.

The local anesthetic will keep you from experiencing pain. However, you will remain awake for the procedure.

Your dentist will create a small opening at the top of your tooth. They'll remove the damaged or infected pulp. Once they've cleaned every canal, they'll coat the area with antibiotics.

The antibiotic will prevent reinfection.

Your dentist will fill and seal the tooth to complete the procedure. They might fill the opening with a soft, temporary filling. This prevents your canals from sustaining damage.

Aftercare

After your root canal procedure, take over-the-counter pain medication to ease any swelling. Let your dentist know if you experience pain that lasts for a few days.

You can resume normal activities after the procedure. Avoid chewing on the damaged tooth until your follow-up appointment.

During this appointment, your dentist will take X-rays to confirm the infection is gone.

They'll place a permanent filling or place a permanent crown.

Visit your dentist every six months for routine appointments. Only 64.1% of adults have visited a dentist in the past year. Routine appointments allow your dentist to spot signs of potential issues.

They can ensure you receive immediate care before you lose a tooth.
